The Betrayers

Better you than me
If someone must do it,
Spearhead the charge
Blaze the trail
Lay the first stone.

It's not my strong suit
Not my calling
Not my duty
So, better you than me.

I see where that road ends—
You couldn't make me walk it—
So narrow, so straight,
Ending in a blaze of heat.
No, you couldn't make me jump
Not into that fiery pit.
So, better you than me.

I shan't make you go.
I don't think I could,
But if I turn tail
That leaves you
To be the decoy
And trigger the trap
While I watch at a distance,
Relieved it's you not me.

You never turned to run
Though you watched us go:
One naked, one purse-heavy,
One sword-wielding,
All self-declared unqualified.
You could not make us come.

If gagged and bound and dragged
To that burning altar,
We'd all turn to dust
And still the fire would rage unquenched.
For we are no better than
Sheep
But he is far better
To accept betrayal
As the reason to go
Thus making us as good as he.
